Contextual Fit
Addition to an Existing Order
The main objective of this project is to create an addition to the Smith House, a modern-style home designed in 1965 by famed architect Richard Meier. The addition must show proof that the existing style and patterns of the home are analyzed and incorporated within the design.
For this project, we also must take into consideration the conceptual analogies for meeting the new needs of the owners of the property while also preserving the integrity of Richard Meier's design.
Narritive
The Smith family commissioned an architect to design an addition to their house on the shore of the Long Island Sound. The Smiths need to have changed since the original design, thereby warranting this architectural intervention. The Owners specifically requested that the integrity of the original design be respected, yet with the new addition having its own presence. In this case, the Smiths have a fascination when it comes to old vessels and sailboats. The new design should have a family room in a very similar shape to the bow of the ship and have the outdoor area the shape of a sail. The exercise room and the two additional bedrooms, one serving as a gaming room, the other being the main suite should be located within the hull of the ship.
Meta Idea & Hierarchy
The hull of the ship reflects the Smith's passion for sailing and the old idea of traveling by boat. There are two castles on the ship, but in this case, we would be focusing on the forecastle located on the bow of the ship. This is where the family would come together and sing sea shanties. The family room should be viewed from the entry floor above on an indoor balcony.
